Mitford – A presentation by CHAPS

Mitford, Glenbow and Cochrane were towns that existed in close proximity. Why did Mitford become a ghost town? Are there any remnants?

CHAPS plans a series of presentations on the history of Cochrane and area. This is the second of the series that occur monthly.

We’ve recorded the presentation by Frank Hennessey and Gordon Davies and copied it to our YouTube channel.  Have a look and remember to subscribe to our channel to get updated every time we produce a new video.

Here’s a video history of Mitford we found on YouTube.

  1. There are foundations of buildings on the south side of the river across from the cemetery. My mom, Vernice Wearmouth/Towers recalls that at Mitford. She recalled her and her dad, Leslie Towers, driving cattle to the stock yards there. The train would come around the corner just east of the stock yards and scare the newly weaned calves through the fence. My mom took me there about 14 years ago.

  2. Interesting, I’d never heard of a stock yards at Mitford. That makes sense though since it preceded Cochrane. It would have been a fairly short distance from the ranch too.

  3. Thanks for reposting this video. As a newcomer to Cochrane, and a long time ‘hobby historian’, I found it quite interesting. Coincidentally I had been doing some research about Cochrane and environs at the library and I had just finished reading about this vanished village. Glad to see that there are others in my new hometown who share my passion for preserving our historical roots.
