Dewey Lee Blaney from More Big Hill Country

Dewey was well respected and a friend to many people in Cochrane and the surrounding area. He often was asked to babysit the neighbourhood children. They in turn considered him a friend. They also knew if they met Dewey on main street he would often hand them a coin to get a treat. Much of his money was spent on the children.

Memories

The theatre was in the Elks’ Hall and the movie was usually a surprise; it seldom showed the picture that was advertised, there were always breakdowns, but when you heard a cheer from the audience, especially the younger folk, the show would flash on and it was well worth waiting for.

These were years when Britain shipped thousands of youngsters to Canada and other parts of the Commonwealth as “British Home Children”. Canada accepted these children to increase the population but, frequently, the families who took them in treated them poorly and used them as cheap labour.
